How to control default user access permissions

Last updated: February 25, 2025

By default, all users in your organization have admin access when your workspace is set to "Open".

To change the default role of a user, click "Access Settings" and set the default role

To change the role of a user, you can click into the Role of the user and set it to Admin or Viewer

Note, in order to restrict users to "Slack only", you must:

  1. Navigate to the Users page

  2. Click "Access Settings" in the top right corner

  3. Change the workspace setting from "Open workspace" to "Needs invite"

Once "Needs invite" is enabled, you can restrict them to "Slack only" access.

Note: You cannot set users to "Slack only" while your workspace is in "Open workspace" mode, as this automatically grants all users full login access.
