How to give admin access to change forwarding rules

Last updated: August 25, 2025

This is an overview on which custom privileges have to be enabled for a google user to be able to create and change forwarding rules. This is needed to set up email forwarding in Pylon. This guide won't give full admin console rights but rather limited access to Pylon relevant areas. The person who is setting this up needs to have sufficient admin rights. Step by step guide:

Note: This process works for both individual user accounts and Google Groups. The same admin privileges are required whether you're setting up email forwarding for a specific user or for a Google Group address.

Creating a custom admin role

  • Log into https://admin.google.com/

  • Account > Admin Roles > Create new role

  • Add Name (e.g., Routing Admin) and description (optional) > Continue

  • Add Admin console privileges

    • Organizational Units > Read only

    • Services > Gmail > Settings

  • Add Admin API privileges

    • Organization Units > Read only

  • Review and Create Role

Adding person to Admin role

  • Directory > Users > Select User > Groups > Add user to groups > Search by Name (e.g., Routing Admin) > ADD

Once this is done, the user should be able to create forwarding records, which are needed to receive emails in Pylon.
